God Renews the Strength of the Weary

Por Matias

There is a tiredness that sleep cannot cure. You can sleep eight hours and wake up with an exhausted soul: tired of waiting, of trying, of watching the answer take so long. Israel knew that tiredness. In exile, far from home and with God’s promises seemingly expired, the people thought God had forgotten them: “My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God” (Isaiah 40:27). Does that sound familiar?

To that weary people, God answered not with a rebuke but with a promise that crosses the centuries: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Before the promise, God reminds them who He is: the everlasting Creator, who “fainteth not, neither is weary” (v. 28). The God who never grows tired is the One who renews those who can’t go on.

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength” (v. 29). Notice who receives the promise: not the one who still has something left, but the one who has no might at all. When your strength reaches zero, you are not late for God: you are at the exact point where His strength begins to work, unmixed with yours. Your weakness does not disqualify your prayer; it makes it more honest, and God draws near to those who seek Him that way.

“Shall renew their strength” can be read as an exchange: you hand Him your weakness and He gives you His strength. But that exchange happens in a specific place: in the waiting. Waiting on the LORD is not sitting around doing nothing; it is active trust, like the eagle that doesn’t flap desperately against the storm but spreads its wings and lets the wind lift it. Some battles aren’t won by flapping harder, but by opening your wings in God’s presence: prayer, the Word, and stillness.

Notice also the order of the promise: first flying, then running, and finally walking without fainting. Sometimes God lifts you like an eagle above the hard season; other times the miracle is quieter: strength for today’s ordinary step — work, family, routine — without giving up along the way. Most of the life of faith isn’t flying: it’s walking every day without letting go of God’s hand. And that, too, is grace.

Today, before demanding one more effort from yourself, stop and wait on God. Ten minutes without your phone, with an open Bible and an honest heart. Tell Him where you’re tired, without dressing it up. He hasn’t forgotten you, He isn’t tired of you, and He is ready to renew you from the inside, one day at a time.

Praise for today

There is a sung prayer that seems written for this very moment: “Renuévame” (Renew Me). I invite you to listen to the songs of Marcos Witt and make that plea your own as you rest in God.

Prayer

Lord, I confess my weariness to You without shame: there are areas of my life where I have no strength left. Today I wait on You. Exchange my weakness for Your strength, lift me like the eagle above this season, and give me a steady step to walk without fainting. In Jesus’ name, amen.
