Verse: «For who has despised the day of small things?» — Zechariah 4:10 (NKJV)
The Hook
You open your phone and there it is: someone your age already has the ministry, the business, the house, the perfect family, and a life that looks like a movie. You close the app, look at your room, your job, your everyday routine, and think: «I’m so far behind». It is like comparing your first chapter with someone else’s twentieth chapter: you will always lose. And the worst part is that this comparison does not just discourage you, it makes you despise what you do have: the small work God gave you today, the short step you can actually take, the seed that cannot be seen yet.

The Truth
Zechariah wrote these words to a people who knew exactly what it felt like to be behind. After the exile in Babylon, the Jews had returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, but the work moved slowly, with few resources and plenty of criticism. The new temple looked modest beside the old one, and many looked at it with contempt. In that context, God tells Zerubbabel, the governor in charge of the work, not to despise «the day of small things»: the humble foundations, the everyday work, what does not impress anyone yet.
The message is clear: God does not measure the way social media measures. He does not expect you to start big; He expects you to start faithful. A seed looks nothing like a tree, but without a seed there is no tree. That first step you are embarrassed to mention, that short prayer before you leave, that forgiveness you gave in silence, that new habit you have kept for three days: to God they are not «little». They are the beginning of something He Himself is building. And what looks small today, in His hands, has a future.
The Reflection
What «small thing» have you been despising because it does not look spectacular?
What if God is more interested in your faithfulness today than in the greatness you dream of for tomorrow?
Today’s Challenge
Today, in less than five minutes, do this: write down a single small thing you can do today to draw closer to God or to someone you love —read a psalm, ask for forgiveness, give thanks for something specific— and do it before the day ends. Do not wait until Monday, or next month, or until you feel ready. The day of small things starts today, with you, with that.
Worship for Today
To go with this devotional, we invite you to listen to the songs of Marcos Witt, a worshipper who has sung for decades that worship does not depend on the stage, but on the heart. Let his music remind you today that what is small, offered to God with sincerity, is also worship.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for despising what is small. Help me to be faithful today in the little I have, and to trust that You are building something great with it. Amen.
