“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” — Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
THE SCENE OR SITUATION
Your phone buzzes on the table before you finish your coffee. You check one message, two, three; you answer one halfway and you’re already thinking about what’s next. The day hasn’t even started, and you’re already running after it. Tasks, errands, calls, news that never stop. And when you finally sit down at night, your mind keeps spinning: you review what was left undone, you rush ahead to tomorrow, and exhaustion mixes with a restlessness that won’t switch off.
We live with noise stuck to our skin. Noise from outside — hurry, demands, screens — and noise from inside: that voice insisting that if you stop, everything falls apart. That’s why it’s so hard for us to be still: we feel that stopping means losing. But what if stillness isn’t giving up, but the place where God most wants to speak to you?
THE LIGHT OF THE WORD
Psalm 46 wasn’t written in calm times: it speaks of the earth being moved, mountains carried into the sea, nations at war. In the middle of that chaos, God says: “Be still, and know that I am God.” He doesn’t say “try harder” or “solve everything first.” He says be still.
In the original Hebrew, “be still” also means “let your hands drop.” It’s the image of someone who stops fighting with their own strength and opens empty hands before God. Being still isn’t doing nothing: it’s stopping trying to be God for a moment and recognizing that He is. When you stop, God doesn’t stop: that’s when He starts to move.
And look at the promise that follows: “I will be exalted.” Stillness ends in worship. When you recognize who He is, the size of your problems falls into place, and the heart finds its center again.
THE PAUSE FOR THE SOUL
Breathe slowly. The world will keep turning if you put your phone face down for ten minutes and close your eyes. God isn’t asking you to ignore your responsibilities: He’s inviting you, before you run, to spend a while with Him. Like the earth that needs the night to rest before dawn, your soul needs stillness to remember who holds it.
Today, in the middle of the noise, choose a moment to do nothing but be. Let go of your hands, literally: open them on your knees and hand Him the day. Peace doesn’t come when everything is resolved; it comes when you decide who’s in charge.
What is it costing you to let go of today that you could place in His hands?
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
Lord, it’s hard for me to be still, but today I choose to release my hands and my hurry before You.
Teach me to know You in stillness and to trust that You are in control.
Today I rest in You: You are God, and I am safe in Your hands. Amen.
