Let Go of That Burden: Forgiving Sets You Free First

THE SCENE

There are nights when the body begs for sleep and the mind won’t obey. You turn off the light, close your eyes, and there it is again: that conversation that hurt you, that message you read too many times, that promise someone broke as if it were nothing. You replay it all again, word by word, as if finding the exact detail could change what happened. And every time the scene returns, the wound opens a little more.

We all carry something like that tucked away. An offense we settle into a corner of our hearts, convinced that keeping it alive protects us. But the truth is simpler and harder: that burden doesn’t weigh on the one who hurt you; it weighs on you. You’re the one dragging it to work, to the table, to bed, even into prayer. Forgiving isn’t saying it didn’t hurt. It’s deciding that pain will no longer run your life.

THE LIGHT OF THE WORD

The Bible doesn’t ask us to forgive because it’s easy, but because it’s the road to freedom. Colossians 3:13 says: “bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”

Notice the order: first look at how you were forgiven. We all came before God with a long list of mistakes, and He didn’t receive us with reproach, but with open arms. The forgiveness you received is the measure of the forgiveness you give. It’s not about whether the other person deserves it — no one does — it’s about releasing what is poisoning you inside.

And note this: forgiving doesn’t mean what they did was right, nor that you must trust them again right away. It means placing the offense in God’s hands and telling Him: “I won’t carry this anymore.” When you do, something breaks inside: perhaps not the distance with that person, but the chain that tied you to that memory.

THE PAUSE FOR THE SOUL

Breathe deeply. Bring that wound, that person, to mind, and ask yourself honestly: how much longer will I let this decide how I feel every day? Letting go isn’t a feeling that arrives when you’re ready; it’s a decision made even while trembling. God doesn’t ask you to pretend it didn’t hurt: He asks you to trust that He can heal what you cannot fix. There are wounds that only close when you stop touching them.

What burden are you willing to release today?

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY

Lord, forgiving is hard for me, and You know it. Today I choose to release this wound into Your hands: I don’t want to carry it anymore. Heal my heart, take away all bitterness, and teach me to forgive as You forgave me. Amen.
