THE SCENE OR SITUATION
On Wednesday evening, Carolina was listening to her thirteen-year-old son describe, between bites of dinner, what his classmates were watching on their phones. She said nothing at first. She only thought quietly: “What values are being planted in my house without me noticing?”
A home is not built with grand speeches, but with small decisions made every day: what is allowed at the table, what is left unsaid in the living room, what is celebrated and what is let slide. Children learn less from what we tell them and much more from what they see us do. A house is built choice by choice, and almost always without anyone noticing. Each night, as the door closes, something is etched into them that no school can teach.
THE LIGHT OF THE WORD
Joshua was already an old man when he gathered all the people of Israel and put the decision before them, without beating around the bush: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).
Notice the order: first “me”, then “my house”. Joshua did not start by demanding; he started by deciding. He did not impose a religion on his family: he took a personal stand so firm that his entire household found its direction. Faith at home is not imposed, it is contagious.
God does not ask you to be a perfect father or mother. He asks for something simpler and deeper: that your house have a clear direction. When you truly decide to serve God —with your time, with your example, with the way you ask for forgiveness when you get it wrong—, your children breathe an atmosphere where faith is not a Sunday speech, but the air of the house.
THE PAUSE FOR THE SOUL
Take a breath. Think of your home as it is today, with its laughter, its hurry, and also its arguments. God does not need your family to be perfect to dwell in it: He only needs you to open the door. He enters where there is a willing heart, and from there He begins to put in order what looked disordered.
What if today you make Joshua’s words your own, out loud or in silence? Say: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD”. Not as a distant goal, but as a decision for today: a prayer before bed, an honest conversation at the table, a forgiveness asked in time.
What is your family learning from you, without you teaching it in words?
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
Lord, I give You my home just as it is. Help me decide first myself, so that my house finds its direction in You. May my family breathe Your peace and learn Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
