Christian news of the week — 26 October 2026

Por Matias

From Spain to Uruguay and from Costa Rica to Seoul, this week the church shows itself serving in emergencies, celebrating its faith in public and seeking to walk more united. Five stories about helping hands, doors opening and a family that wants to move forward together.

Spain: the “Brigada Decisión” is born to help in emergencies and disasters

On 23 October, the evangelical organisation Decisión presented, at its Resource Warehouse in Alcalá de Henares, the “Brigada Decisión”, a project of multidisciplinary teams to intervene in major natural disasters and social emergencies during the first 72 hours of a crisis, both in Spain and abroad.

The idea was born in practice: after the Valencia DANA in 2024, the organisation mobilised dozens of volunteers the day after the disaster, and this summer it accompanied people affected by fires in the Community of Madrid and Ávila together with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s Rapid Response Team. The brigade is organised into four profiles: emergency professionals (police officers, health workers and firefighters), trade professionals (electricians, carpenters and construction technicians), general volunteers for logistical support work and a chaplaincy team for the spiritual and emotional care of those affected. It will work in coordination with Civil Protection and the authorities, with vans, generators, motor pumps and satellite communications to operate independently, and it aims to train more than 100 volunteers in its first phase. On 7 November there will be a free one-day training session at the Pasión con Cristo church, together with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, for those who want to learn how to respond to a crisis and accompany people going through pain. The project is led by David de Lago (general direction), Emeric Olah (national coordinator), Carmelo Troya (chaplaincy), Enrique Justo (action teams) and José Zarco (resources).

À Punt will broadcast live the evangelical event for Reformation Day

The Evangelical Council of the Valencian Community (CECVA) will celebrate on Saturday 31 October, from 6:30 p.m., its institutional event for Protestant Reformation Day at the Chamber of Commerce of Castellón de la Plana, a meeting that the Valencian public television channel À Punt will broadcast live for the fourth consecutive year.

Chamber of Commerce of Castellón de la Plana

Moving the event to Castellón is this year’s new feature, after editions held in Valencia and Gandía, and it gives special relevance to the evangelical community of the province. The meeting will include the participation of the deputy mayor of Castellón, Vicent Sales, and the new CECVA president, Ángel Vicente Palos Tornero, who will open the day with words of welcome and the opening prayer. The programme will combine the reading of the manifesto with the presentation of the five classic principles of the Reformation —Soli Deo Gloria, Solus Christus, Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide and Sola Gratia—, a sermon by pastor Manuel Sarrias on Sola Scriptura and a section entitled “The work in Castellón”, an example of God’s grace in the Valencian Community. One of the central moments will be the presentation of the fifth edition of the Gaspar de Centelles Awards, with which CECVA recognises the work of people and institutions in defence of religious freedom and plurality. The event has the support of the Ajuntament de Castelló, the Interreligious Board of Castellón, the organisation Castelló Ciutat Intercultural, the Pluralismo y Convivencia platform and the Castellón Pastors’ Fellowship.

Seoul will host the World Evangelical Alliance assembly, the first in person since 2019

From 27 to 31 October, Seoul will host the general assembly of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), the first in-person meeting of all national evangelical alliances since 2019, a body that seeks to represent some 600 million evangelical Christians around the world.

Xesús Manuel Suárez, general secretary of the Spanish Evangelical Alliance

The Spanish Evangelical Alliance will travel to South Korea with a clear proposal: that national alliances recover a co-responsible role within the World Alliance, with more participation in decisions, more shared responsibility and more meetings, so that the sense of family and belonging among the world’s evangelicals grows. Its general secretary, Xesús Manuel Suárez, explained in an interview that the WEA would be stronger in its mission with greater internal democracy, and recalled that “the WEA is built with the National Alliances, not with superstructures”. Among the proposals it will take to Seoul: that the International Council be made up of representatives appointed by the regional alliances, that those representatives report regularly to the national alliances and be accountable to them, that the general secretary be elected directly by the General Assembly and that an intermediate assembly be held online. The underlying message is simple and biblical: to ask and listen more before deciding, as Jesus did with Bartimaeus, whom he asked what he wanted him to do for him before healing him.

Uruguay: the Housing Minister receives the CREU president and they pray together

Uruguay’s Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning, Tamara Paseyro, received on 22 October in her office pastor Louder Garabedian, president of the Council of Evangelical Representativeness of Uruguay (CREU), at a meeting that included a dialogue about the Christian faith and a joint prayer.

Louder Garabedian with Minister Tamara Paseyro

According to the organisation itself, Garabedian shared the message of the gospel, with an emphasis on the personal relationship with God, and expressed the organisation’s willingness to collaborate with institutions. When asked about prayer requests, the minister expressed her wish to receive spiritual support for the development of her work and the responsibilities of the ministry, and the meeting ended with a joint prayer in the office. Founded in 2004, CREU brings together evangelical organisations and churches and maintains links with institutions and public authorities: in July 2021, a delegation led by Garabedian had already been received by then-president Luis Lacalle Pou, in the same non-partisan spirit of service to vulnerable people. The visit to Paseyro took place a week after the presentation of the “Abriendo Puertas–Primera Vivienda” programme, although CREU’s publication does not indicate that this initiative was discussed during the meeting.

13th General Assembly of the Latin Evangelical Alliance in Costa Rica

The meeting, opened with the Public Bible Reading Summit and a worship service organised by the Costa Rican Evangelical Alliance Federation, brought together the presidents of the member alliances, their boards, commission coordinators and executive secretaries. Spiritual impact

These five stories portray one church on the move: organising itself to arrive first when disaster strikes, celebrating its faith in public and on television, seeking to walk united beyond borders, carrying the gospel into government offices and sitting at the table to align its mission. To serve, to celebrate, to unite and to proclaim: four verbs of a single mission, that of a church that neither hides nor grows weary.

Prayer point: Let us pray this week for the Brigada Decisión volunteers and for their training on 7 November; for the Reformation Day event in Castellón and for all who will follow it live; for the Seoul assembly, that unity may translate into wise decisions; for Minister Paseyro and her work in Uruguay; and for the evangelical alliances of Latin America, that their social work may keep opening doors to the gospel.

Verse: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
