Juan Carlos Alvarado: complete biography and discography with all his albums and songs

Few voices have shaped Latin American worship music like Juan Carlos Alvarado: a pioneer of Spanish-language praise since the 1980s, Guatemalan pastor and songwriter, author of classics like «Jehová es mi guerrero», «Aviva el fuego» and «Mi mejor adoración» sung in churches across the continent. In this post we tell his complete story and review his entire discography, album by album. If you want to listen to Juan Carlos Alvarado with his videos, here we also tell you where to find his Juan Carlos Alvarado songs gathered on Música Cristiana.

1. Complete biography

Early years in Guatemala (1964–1985)

Juan Carlos Alvarado Herrera was born on December 28, 1964, in Guatemala, where he grew up in the city of Quetzaltenango. From childhood he showed a bent for music: he joined the children’s band of the Liceo Guatemala school in his city. At 17, already a piano and synthesizer player, he played in a youth secular rock band. In that season he converted to Christ and turned completely toward Christian music, a decision that marked the rest of his life.

Palabra en Acción and the first records (1986–1992)

At 21 he served as worship pastor of the «Iglesia Cristiana Palabra en Acción», and with that congregation he produced his first records: «Digno de Alabar» (1986), «Jehová Es Mi Guerrero» (1988), «Glorificad a Jehová» (1989), «Santo Es el Señor» (1990) and «Más Que Vencedor» (1990). From that era came songs of spiritual warfare like «Jehová es mi guerrero» and «El poderoso de Israel», which became hymns in evangelical churches across Latin America. In those years he founded his ministry and production company «Adoración & Alabanza Producciones», from which he would coordinate all his ministerial activity.

The solo years: «Aviva El Fuego» and Word Records (1993–1998)

In 1993 he recorded «Aviva El Fuego», his first solo album, which gave us «Aviva el fuego», «No basta», «Soy deudor» and «Mi mejor adoración». That same year, CanZion Producciones and Hosanna! Music worked with him on «Tu Palabra» and «Glorifícate». He then signed with the American label WORD, with which he produced «León de Judá» (1994), the Spanish version of Dave Bell’s «Lion of Judah». In 1995 he celebrated his tenth ministerial anniversary with «Hoy Más Que Ayer», gathering 19 of his most blessed songs. He is counted, alongside Marcos Witt, Marco Barrientos, Jaime Murrell, Danilo Montero and Jesús Adrián Romero, among the Latin American praise and worship movement of the 1980s.

Pause, return and today (1999–2026)

After a marital collapse (he divorced Patricia Alvarado in 1997 and married Jennifer de Alvarado in 2002), he took a pause of about two years under the pastoral supervision of the Christian mission «Visión de Fe». He returned with «Nunca Digas Nunca» (1999), an album where he sang of God’s grace, mercy and love from a place of pain. It was followed by «Vivo Para Cristo» (2001), «Fiesta» (2004), the live concert «Fuego» (2006), «Tu Palabra Cantaré» (2007) and «Momentos de Adoración» (2010). Since March 2020 he has ministered live worship nights via streaming (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays). In 2020 he released the medley «El Dios de Israel es Poderoso», nominated for two 2021 Premios Arpa, and in 2025 he returned to recording with «Esencia», produced by Ariel García — a journey to the roots of the gospel and the fruit of 40 years of ministry. A father of 5, he remains active as a pastor and psalmist.
