In this post we tell his complete story and review his entire discography, album by album. 1. Complete biography

Early years in California and the call to worship (1971–1994)

Israel Houghton was born on May 19, 1971, in Oceanside, California, United States, to a white mother and a Jamaican father. From a young age he showed a bent for music: he sings and plays guitar and keyboards. In 1989, at just 18, he entered full-time worship ministry, serving as a worship leader in various congregations.

New Breed Ministries and the recording debut (1995–2001)

In 1995 he founded New Breed Ministries together with his then-wife Meleasa Houghton, gathering a group of musicians and singers that would become his permanent backing band: New Breed. Most of his records would be credited as «Israel & New Breed». His solo debut came in 1997 with «Whisper It Loud» (Warner). In 2001 he released «Nueva Generación», his first album in Spanish, and «New Season», the first record as Israel & New Breed and the first with Sony, which marked the beginning of his highest-profile era.

Consolidation: gold records and first Grammys (2002–2008)

In 2002 he released «Real» with Integrity Music, the Christian label that would become his recording home. The live albums «Live from Another Level» (2004) and «Alive in South Africa» (2005) followed, both certified gold by the RIAA. The latter earned him his first Grammy in 2007 (Best Traditional Gospel Album). In 2007 he released «A Deeper Level», which won him another Grammy in 2008, and «Esse Momento», a Spanish- and Portuguese-language release. As a producer, in 2003 he produced Michael Gungor’s «Bigger Than My Imagination», praised by Christianity Today as one of the best worship albums of the year.

The Grammy era: «The Power of One» and «Love God. Love People.» (2009–2012)

«The Power of One» (2009) and «Love God. Love People.» (2010) earned him two consecutive Grammys for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album (2010 and 2011). From this era came songs like «You Found Me» (with tobyMac), «Every Prayer» (with Mary Mary) and «Hosanna (Be Lifted Higher)». In 2012 came «Jesus at the Center», recorded live, whose «Your Presence Is Heaven» won the 2013 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song, and «It’s Not Over (When God Is in It)» (with James Fortune and Jason Nelson) reached #1 on US Gospel.

«Covered: Alive in Asia» and new projects (2013–2022)

The Spanish reissue «Jesús En El Centro: En Vivo» (2013) brought his songs to the Latin audience with guests like Coalo Zamorano, Funky, Lucia Parker and Danilo Montero. In 2015 he released «Covered: Alive in Asia», recorded in Asia, which won the 2016 Grammy for Best Gospel Album and included «How Awesome Is Our God» (with Yolanda Adams). In 2018 he signed with Provident/Sony and released «Road to DeMaskUs», featuring his version of «Reckless Love» (#1 on Gospel Digital) and «Promise Keeper» (with Travis Greene). In 2021 he released «Feels Like Home, Vol. 1» and «Vol. 2» on his District 11 label (the second one Grammy-nominated), plus «Project LA: Alive in Los Angeles». In 2022 he closed his concert era with «Worship Anywhere: Live from Camp NewBreed». In his personal life, after his divorce from Meleasa Houghton (2016), he married singer and TV personality Adrienne Bailon on November 11, 2016; they have a son, Ever James (2022).

The Latin era: «Coritos» and «Magnificent» (2025–2026)

In 2025 he surprised with «Coritos, Vol. 1» and «Coritos, Vol. 2», fully Spanish-language albums with Latin guests like Miel San Marcos, Alex Campos, Evan Craft, Aaron Moses and Lucia Parker. «Coritos, Vol. 1» won the 2026 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album — the first Spanish-language album to win that category — and «Coritos de Fuego» won the 2025 Dove for Spanish song. In 2026 he released «Magnificent», a collaborative album with British singer Philippa Hanna. With 8 Grammy Awards from 19 nominations, 15 Dove Awards and 2 Stellar Awards, Israel Houghton is one of the most awarded and influential voices in contemporary worship. He currently serves as a worship leader at Lakewood Church in Houston.
