Few bands have taken Christian rock as far as Skillet: from a worship project at a Memphis church to selling out arenas, with over 23 million albums sold worldwide and the first song by a Christian artist in the Spotify Billions Club. In this entry we tell their complete story and review their entire discography, album by album. If you want to listen to Skillet with their videos, here we also tell you where to find their Skillet songs gathered on Música Cristiana.

1. Complete biography
Origins in Memphis: from church to Christian label (1995/1996-1999)
Skillet is an American Christian rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee. Sources vary between 1995 and 1996: their first documented concert was on December 1, 1995, and their debut album came out on October 29, 1996. It began as a side project of John Cooper, former vocalist of the progressive rock band Seraph, and Ken Steorts, former guitarist of Urgent Cry. After both bands broke up, the pastor of Covenant Community Church, where they played in the worship band, encouraged them to start their own group. The name “Skillet” came about as a joke: since they came from different styles, it was like throwing a bunch of different things into a big skillet to see what comes out. Barely a month after forming, they signed with the Christian label ForeFront Records, in partnership with Ardent Records, and released their self-titled debut “Skillet” (1996). John’s wife, Korey Cooper, started playing keyboards live in 1998 and joined permanently in 1999/2000.
Finding their sound and breakthrough: “Collide” and “Comatose” (2000-2008)
After several lineup changes in the early years, their sound evolved from the alternative grunge of the debut to the industrial and electronic rock of “Hey You, I Love Your Soul” (1998) and “Invincible” (2000), through the live worship album “Ardent Worship” (2000) and “Alien Youth” (2001). Their commercial breakthrough came with “Collide” (2003, reissued by Lava/Atlantic in 2004), nominated for the Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album in 2005, and was cemented with “Comatose” (2006): number 4 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums, Platinum record, Grammy nomination in 2007, and the anthems “Rebirthing”, “Whispers in the Dark”, “Comatose” and “The Older I Get”. In 2008 drummer Jen Ledger joined, completing the core of the lineup that lasts to this day.
The peak: “Awake”, “Rise” and “Unleashed” (2009-2018)
“Awake” (2009) debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, a record for a Christian album at the time, won the 2011 Billboard Music Award for Top Christian Album and is double platinum; it contains their two biggest songs: “Monster” and “Hero”. They followed with “Rise” (2013, number 4 on the Billboard 200, Gold record) and “Unleashed” (2016, number 3 on the Billboard 200, Platinum record), whose single “Feel Invincible” was the first song by a Christian band to reach number 1 on Mainstream Rock. In 2011 guitarist Seth Morrison joined, and the lineup has not changed since: John Cooper, Korey Cooper, Jen Ledger and Seth Morrison.
Independence and today: “Victorious”, “Dominion” and “Revolution” (2019-2026)
“Victorious” (2019) reached number 1 on the Top Christian Albums, and “Dominion” (2022) was their last album with Atlantic after nearly 20 years with the label. In 2024 they released “Revolution”, their twelfth studio album and their first as independents under their own Hear It Loud label, which also debuted at number 1 on the Top Christian Albums. In November 2025 they released their first Christmas recording, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, and in October 2026 the 6-song EP “After the Storm”. According to their official statement of August 2026: over 23 million albums sold worldwide, about 12 million monthly listeners on Spotify, “Monster” surpassed 5 billion global streams entering the Spotify Billions Club as the first song by a Christian artist to do so, and their official YouTube channel exceeds 2.8 billion views. John Cooper openly declares his Christian faith in interviews, and the band has toured with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
