1. Biografía completa

Infancia en Virginia Occidental y primeros pasos (1957-1982)

Michael Whitaker Smith nació el 7 de octubre de 1957 en Kenova, Virginia Occidental, hijo de Paul y Barbara Smith. Su amor por la música nació en su iglesia, la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Kenova, donde aprendió piano y cantó en el coro juvenil; a los 10 años tuvo una intensa experiencia espiritual que lo llevó a una fe devota. Tras la secundaria pasó por una etapa de drogas y alcohol; en 1978 se mudó a Nashville y, en noviembre de 1979, tras una crisis personal, se reencontró con su fe y entró como tecladista al grupo Higher Ground. En 1981 lo contrataron como compositor en Meadowgreen Music, donde escribió éxitos góspel para Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither y Amy Grant; al año siguiente empezó a girar como tecladista de Grant en su gira «Age to Age». En 1981 se casó con Deborah Kay Davis, con quien tiene cinco hijos y coescribió «Friends».

El debut y el éxito en la música cristiana (1983-1989)

En 1983 grabó su primer álbum como solista, «Project» (The Michael W. Smith Project), producido por él mismo para Reunion Records y nominado al Grammy; incluía la primera grabación de «Friends». Le siguieron «Michael W. Smith 2» (1984), que le dio su primer Grammy, «The Big Picture» (1986) e «I 2 (EYE)» (1988). En 1989 publicó su primer álbum navideño, «Christmas». El salto al pop y los años noventa (1990-1999)

«Go West Young Man» (1990) lo llevó al pop general: «Place in This World» llegó al número 6 del Billboard Hot 100. «Change Your World» (1992) trajo «I Will Be Here for You», número 1 en la radio adulta contemporánea. En 2000 grabó «Freedom», su primer álbum totalmente instrumental. El 11 de septiembre de 2001 publicó «Worship», su primer álbum de adoración, grabado en vivo en concierto; le siguió «Worship Again» (2002), ganador del Grammy. «Above All», de «Worship», se convirtió en un himno cantado en iglesias de todo el mundo, y «There She Stands», inspirada en los atentados del 11 de septiembre, la cantó en la Convención Nacional Republicana de 2004.

«Healing Rain», «Stand» y el cine (2004-2010)

«Healing Rain» (2004) debutó en el número 11 del Billboard 200 y su canción título llegó al número 1 de la radio; «Stand» (2006) siguió la misma línea CCM. En 2006 protagonizó la película «The Second Chance» e hizo su banda sonora. En 2007 publicó su tercer álbum navideño, «It’s a Wonderful Christmas», y en 2008 grabó en la iglesia Lakewood de Houston «A New Hallelujah», su tercer álbum de adoración en vivo. «Wonder» llegó en 2010.

Himnos, «Sovereign» y la actualidad (2011-2026)

«Glory» (2011), su segundo álbum instrumental con orquesta de 65 músicos, ganó el Dove. En 2014 publicó tres álbumes: «Hymns», con sus versiones de himnos clásicos (Dove a Álbum Inspiracional); «Sovereign», su primer álbum de estudio de adoración y su debut en Capitol Records (número 10 del Billboard 200); y «The Spirit of Christmas», su primer álbum de duetos, con Carrie Underwood, Bono, Amy Grant y más (Dove a Álbum Navideño del Año 2015). También publicó el álbum infantil «Lullaby» (2018) junto a su serie de libros «Nurturing Steps». En 2018 lanzó el pop «A Million Lights» y el álbum de adoración en vivo «Surrounded»; en 2019, «Awaken: The Surrounded Experience» en vivo con «Waymaker»; en 2021, «Worship Forever» en vivo por el 20.º aniversario del 11 de septiembre; y en 2024 el EP «Worthy Is the Lamb», grabado en la Universidad Belmont.
