She was an Egyptian servant, used and then discarded, who fled into the desert pregnant and with nothing. Nobody was looking for her. Nobody asked about her. And right there, by a spring of water in the middle of nowhere, God found her.

Nobody sees you, but he does

Maybe you know that desert. Not the one with sand, but the other one: working hard and nobody notices. Taking care of everyone and nobody asks how you are. Praying in silence and feeling that heaven does not answer. Hagar’s desert is not a geographical place: it is that season when you feel invisible.

But Hagar discovered something that changed her story: she gave God a name. She called him «El Roi,» the God who sees me. She is the only person in the entire Bible who dares to name God, and she names him from her pain. She did not say «the God who fixed everything for me,» because nothing was fixed yet. She said: the God who sees me. And that was enough for her to get up and go on.

Being seen changes everything

Being seen by God does not mean the desert disappears instantly. Hagar had to go back and face what she had left behind. But she went back different: she was no longer the invisible woman; she was a woman who had been found. When you know that God sees you, the desert stops being a punishment and becomes an encounter.

Today, wherever you are — in your kitchen, at your job, in that hospital, in that room where you cry without anyone knowing — there is a God who sees you by name. You are not just another number to him. You are seen, known, and loved. And the same God who found Hagar by the spring finds you today.

To meditate

Read Genesis 16 in full today and underline this phrase: «You are the God who sees me.» Then ask yourself: in what area of my life do I need to remember that God is watching over me?

«You are the God who sees me.» — Genesis 16:13 Hagar was not a heroine of the faith.
