Not because everything was solved, but because you were at peace: someone greater was taking care of it. That is exactly the feeling David describes in Psalm 23. It was not written by a theologian at a desk: it was written by a shepherd who knew what it meant to spend the night watching over a flock, and who one day understood that God did for him what he did for his sheep.

“The LORD is my shepherd.” David does not say that God is “a shepherd” among many, nor “the Shepherd of the church.” He says “my shepherd.” Personal. Close. The one who knows me by name.

The Shepherd who knows His sheep

David knew something we often forget: a good shepherd knows every sheep. He knows which one wanders off, which one is hurt, which one needs more food. And God knows us that way. He knows your bills, your fears at three in the morning, that need you have not yet dared to tell anyone.

That is why the promise of the verse is not “nothing will ever hurt” or “you will never have problems.” The promise is better: “I shall not want.” Want is a word of need, not of whim. God does not promise to give you everything that crosses your mind; He promises that nothing you truly need will be missing. That is the difference between a providing Father and a genie in a lamp.

I shall not want: provision arrives on time

Notice the tense of the verb: “I shall not want.” It does not say “I lack nothing right now.” It is future. It is trust. David declares it before seeing the provision, as if it were already guaranteed.

Remember how God fed Elijah by the brook, or the widow whose flour did not run out? God arrives on time, even when it feels late to us. When worry shouts at you that you will not make it to the end of the month, that you will not be able to handle what is coming, return to this sentence and say it out loud: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Faith is also exercised by repeating the truth until the heart believes it.

The green pastures: learning to rest

Verse 2 says the Shepherd makes us lie down in “green pastures.” Sheep do not rest if they are afraid, hungry, or restless; they only lie down when they feel safe. God wants to bring you to that rest: not the rest of one who gave up, but the rest of one who trusts.

Perhaps today you are running from one place to another trying to solve everything on your own. The Shepherd is calling you to stop, to breathe, to let Him lead. Listening to songs by Alex Campos or playing some Christian music in the background can be a lovely way to quiet your heart while remembering who is in charge.

To meditate on

What is it that worries you today and keeps you awake at night? Bring it to the Shepherd in prayer, with a name and a surname, and declare to Him: “Lord, You are my shepherd; I shall not want.” Suggested reading: all of Psalm 23, slowly, picturing yourself as one of those cared-for sheep.

“The LORD is my shepherd;
