Two hours in, her legs burn with every stride, her breathing feels like the air turned to lead… and there are still 8 miles to go. Right there, exactly there, appears the famous «wall»: that inner voice shouting «stop, you can’t do this, this isn’t for you». The curious thing is that most runners who quit a marathon don’t quit at mile 1 or mile 25; they quit in that middle stretch, where they’ve spent too much energy to turn back and have too far to go to see the finish line. They quit not because their bodies are broken, but because their minds convinced them it wasn’t worth continuing.

The spiritual life works exactly the same way. We don’t get tired at the start —we start with fire, with plans, with a highlighted Bible and promises on the wall—. We get tired in the middle of the road: when we’ve spent months praying for that person who doesn’t change, serving in a ministry where nobody thanks you, being honest in a job where everyone takes shortcuts, forgiving the same thing for the fifth time… and you still don’t see results. That’s your mile 18. And it’s exactly there where the enemy whispers the loudest: «stop sowing, nobody notices, nothing changes».

The Truth

The apostle Paul wrote this to the Christians in Galatia, a young church that was discouraged: between the critics’ attacks, the pressure around them and the passing of time, many had started to slack off. Paul himself was a church planter who knew weariness from the inside: weeks of walking journeys, shipwrecks, rejection, beatings, prisons. If anyone had the right to say «I can’t go on», it was him. And yet he writes: «And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.» — Galatians 6:9.

Notice the image he chooses: a farmer. The one who sows does not harvest the next day; he works under the sun, waters, pulls the weeds, waits for the rains… and the harvest comes in due season, not on our schedule. No farmer digs up the seed every week to check whether it grew; doing that would kill it. Paul doesn’t promise that doing good is easy or fast; he promises that it’s worth it. The real danger isn’t the opposition outside, it’s the fainting inside: quitting sowing just before harvest season. Keeping on sowing when you see nothing is the purest act of faith: you believe God is watering what you cannot see.

The Reflection

What is that good thing you started with excitement —praying for someone, serving, forgiving, being honest— and today you’re tempted to abandon right in the middle of the road?

Are you measuring your faithfulness by the results you see today or by God’s promise for «in due season»?

Today’s Challenge

Today, in under 5 minutes, do ONE small thing of that good work you left half done: send that encouraging message you’ve been postponing, pray 3 minutes for that person who is hard for you, pick up that service task again. Don’t do it to «see results» today; do it to sow one more seed in the field God is watering.

Worship for Today

To walk with you today, I recommend «Eres mi Fuerza»: when your own strength runs out, He is the one who lifts you up to keep running. Listen to Christine D’Clario and let her worship remind you where your strength really comes from.

Prayer

Lord, when I get weary in the middle of the road, remind me that the harvest comes in Your time. Give me strength not to give up and to sow one more day. Amen.

The Hook Think of the marathon runner at mile 18.
